BMW’s M performance division used to be snobby. Unlike rival Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division, M wouldn’t build a souped-up version of every BMW just to fill gaps in the lineup. But then BMW figured out that AMG’s model was more profitable and started copying its rival. Which is how we ended up with the 2020 BMW X3 M and X4 M.

The X3 M and X4 M are performance versions of BMW’s X3 and X4 crossovers. The main difference between the X3 and X4 is that the latter has different styling to make it look more like a “coupe.” BMW has offered M versions of the larger X5 and X6 for years, so it was only a matter of time before the X3 and X4 got the same treatment.

But are these two BMW crossovers really worthy of the M badge? They do have lots of power under their hoods. Both the X3 M and X4 M use a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six. The engine produces 473 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque in base form, but high-end Competition models get 503 hp. Torque remains the same, but it’s available through a wider area of the rev range. The only available transmission is an eight-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive is standard. The all-wheel drive system can’t shift to rear-wheel drive, as in the BMW M5, but BMW said it is rear biased to ensure lively handling.

BMW expects base versions to do zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, and 4.0 seconds for Competition models. All versions are electronically limited to 155 mph, but BMW will offer customers the option to have the limiter raised to 174 mph on base models, and 177 mph on Competition models.

As with other BMW M models, the X3 M and X4 M also get chassis upgrades like M-specific adaptive suspension and brakes, more aggressive looking exterior styling, and interior festooned with M badges. Carbon-fiber interior trim is available as well.

The 2020 BMW X3 M and X4 M will be built at the automaker’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, factory, with production slated to start in April. Pricing will be announced closer to the launch date. The two performance crossovers will face off against a competent group of rivals, including the Porsche Macan Turbo, Mercedes-AMG GLC 63, and Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) head Nitin Gadkari was presented with the Innovation Award by the Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) at its World Congress 2018 event held in Delhi.

The honour was awarded to the Government of India in recognition of its contribution to enhance vehicle safety and was handed over to Gadkari and Abhay Damle, joint secretary of MoRTH, by David Ward, President of the GNCAP and Max Mosley, former chairman of the GNCAP.

According to the Global NCAP, “The Government of India acted decisively to implement new vehicle safety regulations that represent a highly innovative initiative for such a major emerging automobile manufacturing nation.”

The government was commended for its adoption of new front- and side-impact crash-test norms for cars, the introduction of speed-warning devices as well as mandating automatic headlights and ABS on two-wheelers.

GNCAP started crash-testing Indian-made cars in 2014. With the first few models failing the tests, manufacturers in India put in a lot of effort and resources into making cars safer for. And as a result, the Tata Nexon became the first made-in-India vehicle to receive a 5-star crash rating by the Global NCAP last year. Additionally, the Mahindra Marazzo, Toyota Etios Liva, Tata Zest and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza all passed the crash tests with a commendable 4-star safety rating too.

Due for launch on February 14, the Mahindra XUV300 has been one of the most awaited cars of 2019. As reported, Mahindra will offer the XUV300 in four variants with two engines options-a 1.2-litre turbo petrol producing 200Nm of peak torque and a Marazzo-sourced 300Nm, 1.5-litre diesel. At the time of launch, both engines will come mated to a six-speed manual gearbox only. However, we can confirm that the diesel XUV300 will be offered with an AMT gearbox option soon.

We broke the news of the Marazzo getting an AMT gearbox initially followed by a torque converter and in a similar fashion, Mahindra will equip the diesel powered XUV300 with the Magnetti-Marelli sourced AMT gearbox as well. This will help the XUV300 compete better with rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the Tata Nexon and even the Hyundai Creta, all of which are available in diesel-automatic configurations. The Mahindra XUV300 AMT will be launched shortly after the manual versions and would cost a slight premium over their manual counterparts. As for the petrol, there has been no confirmation of it receiving the AMT gearbox, for now.

As with the Marazzo, Mahindra will replace the AMT gearbox with an Aisin-sourced torque converter automatic unit on the XUV300 at the time that it would also receive an upgraded engine to meet the BS-VI emission norms ahead of the April 2020 deadline.

Rivian was one of those companies that had many of the hallmarks of being vaporware before it released its two incredible electric concepts at the in 2018. We had to eat a little crow after that, as did the bulk of the motoring press because Rivian seemed to be a real player.

Now, a couple of the largest companies in the world seem to be agreeing with that stance, because according to a report from published on Tuesday, both and are considering investing in the EV company.

Both Rivian and Amazon declined to offer comment on the matter while GM didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Rivian's R1T and R1S concepts were both truly impressive when they made their world debut in LA last year. We also found the design and construction techniques that Rivian is using for its battery packs to be fairly ingenious and has left us wanting an even closer look at the company's work.

If Rivian did receive the rumored billions in investment from Amazon and GM, it could be enough to push the company light years beyond any other EV manufacturer, none of which have offered as seemingly comprehensive a package as Rivian's R1T.
